Summer Reading Program has begun! Get started here.
For kids to keep up with their peers in the classroom, participating in the Summer Reading Program at Maryville Public Library is a great place to start. Some researchers are expecting an even larger gap in school readiness as kids head back to school in the fall due to extended time away from classes and resources this spring in the face of COVID-19 (McNulty, Baird & colleagues, 2020). The report indicates that struggling readers and those in low-income areas will be the hardest hit in terms of learning loss.
Summer Reading Program (SRP) is an on-your-own, do-it-anywhere, totally free reading program for library cardholders. Participants read any books they choose and track how many days (grades 1-adult) or books (before Kindergarten) they read in order to earn a prize at completion.
Registration and logging begin June 1. Once registered, readers can begin logging their reading activity that day. The last date to log is July 31. For those who registered last summer, participants can simply log in to their Beanstack account at maryvillepubliclibrary.beanstack.org and update their information beginning June 1. Readers who did not participate last year can go to the same website and register easily in less than five minutes. For those who would prefer a paper log for tracking or even to motivate readers, a printable version is available at the end of this post for grades 1-adult (or by clicking this link for 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten https://maryvillepubliclibrary.lib.mo.us/2018/01/26/1000-books-before-kindergarten-forms-available/ ), on a display in the children’s area, or by calling 660-582-5281. Logs can then be mailed to those readers for either program who call and would rather not venture out.
Veteran patrons of SRP, may notice that some changes have been made this year which include all age levels (except before kindergarten) having a completion target of 20 minutes of reading per day for 20 days with a prize at the end for completion. There is not an additional librarian’s challenge or competition for medals. The before kindergarten group will either continue or begin the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program which runs year-round. Prizes for this age group are awarded at 100, 500, and 1,000 books. Completers of the 1,000 Books program also get to have their nameplate placed in a favorite book in the library collection and participate in a graduation.
